VHS tape screening- Top Gun- December 28, 2011

This week we are going to watch a movie that is all about being the BEST. It's not just about being the best you can personally be, it's about being the best of anybody. In the case of the movie, that means being the best damn fighter pilot there is. That's right, we're t...alking about Top Gun starring Tom Cruise. Cruise plays the young new pilot "Maverick" who's trying to make a name for himself, but a severe accident leaves him doubting himself and his ability to be the best.

When I was a kid, my dad made me leave the room during the sex scene in this movie. Later, when I finally saw it I was disappointed by how tame it was. Nobody will be forced to leave the room during our screening...only if you want to.

VHS tape screening- Doc Hollywood- December 21, 2011

I am so tired of Christmas!!! Which is why we are watching Doc Hollywood this week, as in THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS. I don't even care anymore. Whatever. Hopefully some of you will be around, but the more I think about it, the less confidence I get. Like I said: Whatever....

So here's a movie about a brilliant doctor who decides to seek fame and fortune in the plastic surgery world, but after being confronted with small town life is forced with the choice of whether fame and fortune will satisfy.

It' a very complex plot.

Everyone who misses this movie will have to feel very bad about themselves because this is one of the greatest Michael J. Fox movies of all time. I realize that this is a holiday week, Christmas no less, but all of that is meaningless to others of us. OTHERS OF US...so yeah.

VHS tape screening- Christmas cartoon surprise!!!- December 14, 2011

Here's yet another unorthodox VHS screening. I have number of Christmas cartoons on tape that I thought I'd show. The ones that I'd really like to watch are A Charlie Brown Christmas and the Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer stop-motion animation special with Burl Ives.

A couple of more obcure ones I have include Pinocchio's Christmas (also stop motion animation) and Cosmic Christmas, a cartoon about three aliens visiting Earth on Christmas night. These are both incredibly bad, and therefore highly recommended, by me.

Plus, today I found a tape at my parents' house of Christmas cartoons taped off of television in the 80s, so the commercials are even more nostalgic (How the Grinch Stole Christmas is included on this tape), but I'm not sure if it will work on my VCR. It's super old. Anyway, we'll have to discuss what people are interested in. Feel free to comment between now and then. Below are some links to random clips of some these cartoons:

A Charlie Brown Christmas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAINtrR7UBI&feature=relmfu

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgHCZWoMwm4&feature=related

Pinocchio's Christmas (soooo bad): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qbewoHLdhM

Cosmic Christmas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmpcO2BXgTc&feature=related

Other specials from the taped-from-80s-TV tape include the Looney Tunes Christmas, something called Christmas Bear, The Smurfs Christmas, and more. I haven't watched the whole tape.Of course this is all depending on whether my train arrives on time. Presumably, I'll be getting in town around 6:45, which means I should be back at the house just in time. However, be on the lookout for a text message from me in case of delays.

VHS tape screening- Edward Scissorhands (Dinner and a Movie version)- December 7, 2011

This week will be different than usual as we will be watching a copy of Edward Scissorhands that I taped from television back when I was in high school; 1990s commercials will be included in the screening. This was when the movie was featured on the TBS Superstation show,... Dinner and a Movie, so there will also be interludes by people cooking a meal somehow related to the film.

Here's the theatrical trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWFa8zfWfeA&feature=related

For those of you who haven't seen this picture...sorry. This will be an unusual screening, edited for TV and whatnot, but it should be an interesting sociological experience.

VHS tape screening- The Muppet Christmas Carol- November 30, 2011

After a week's hiatus, our VHS screening night returns with The Muppets Christmas Carol. I believe we discussed the possibility of watching this previously because someone mentioned doing a holiday themed movie. Probably all of you have seen this, but hopefully not too recently. Hopefully none of you watched it on cable TV this last week if you were at your family's house for Thanksgiving. I know I had to fight the urge, but not too much since there was a college football game my dad wanted to watch instead.

Anyway, here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MHz15Ah_CI

I like the part at the end where the narrator says this is a movie you want to watch with the people you love. I love you guys and I missed you so much! Sigh. That's the power of VHS.

Anyway, I just got back from the movies with my mom where I saw the new Muppets film starring Jason Segal, and I am gung-ho about more of Kermit and the gang. I hope to see you there.
